Hypertension

Arterial hypertension (AH) is a syndrome of high blood pressure. Essential or primary hypertension occupies 90-95% of all hypertension cases. Secondary hypertension is diagnosed in patients with renal diseases (3-4%), disorders of hormonal system (0,1-0,3%), hemodynamic and neurological disorders, predisposition to stress. Certain chemical substances and pregnancy can also cause increase of blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the amount of pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the vessels as it passes through them. Classification of blood pressure levels include the following:

  • Optimal blood pressure 120/80 mm Hg.
  • Normal BP 130/85 mm Hg.
  • Prehypertension 130-139/85-90 mm Hg
  • 1 degree (mild hypertension) 140-159/90-99 mm HG.
  • 2 degree (moderate hypertension) 160-179/100-109 mm HG.
  • 3 degree (severe hypertension) - 180 and /110 and mm HG.
  • Isolated systolic hypertension - 140 and / 90 mm HG.

The exact cause of hypertension is still unknown. However, there are known a lot of factors that may provoke hypertension developing. These factors may significantly increase the risk of hypertension. They include:

  • Excessive salt consumption (main source of salt)
  • Atherosclerosis (atherosclerosis and hypertension are usually concomitant diseases)
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Insufficient physical activity
  • Hereditary factors
  • Age

Treatment of hypertension include lifestyle changes and pharmacotherapy. Together they can successfully maintain the normal level of blood pressure. Life style changes that may help in hypertension management include:

  • Reducing salt consultation
  • Losing weight
  • Being more physically
  • Healthy nutrition

In lifestyle changes do not bring positive effect, hypertension drugs may be used. In certain cases herbal supplement may be recommended by health care providers.
